Few cities inspire as much awe – and as much as concerns and anxious Googling about safety – as Istanbul.
Visitors often arrive expecting the city to play the villain: shadows filled with scams, petty theft at every corner, and a metropolis seemingly conspiring against them. But the truth is more complicated and far less sensational.

Measured against its peers, Istanbul is no outlier. On violent crime, it often fares better than Berlin, Paris, London, or New York. On petty theft in tourist-heavy districts, it follows the same script as every global metropolis. That’s to say, fears are familiar, not exceptional.
This article sets Istanbul in a global frame, comparing safety in Istanbul with that of Western capitals. The goal is simple: to replace clichés with facts.
Istanbul In Global Crime Perspective
Many travelers assume Istanbul is riskier than other major Western capitals. The data, however, contrasts sharply with this perception. On measures of violent crime, homicide, drug-related incidents, and petty theft, Istanbul is generally on par with or even lower than other major Western capitals. Social scams, by contrast, remain the city’s defining non-violent risk for visitors: culturally embedded, strategically executed, and unique to the local urban landscape.

Violent Crime
When it comes to violent crime, including assault and robbery, Istanbul often compares favorably with London, Paris, and especially New York. Berlin comes closest in relative terms, though its crime statistics show an upward trend in assaults and homicides. London records far higher volumes of violent incidents, including a notable number of knife crime hotspots, while New York remains a clear outlier, leading global rankings despite a recent decline in reported incidents.
Homicide
Istanbul’s homicide rate is low relative to these cities. In absolute terms, Istanbul recorded 202 murders in 2024, London 107, Berlin 53, and New York 377. However, these figures shift once adjusted for population size. On that basis, Istanbul, London, Berlin, and Paris show similarly low rates of around 1–1.5 per 100,000 residents. New York stands apart, exceeding 4 per 100,000 and ranking as a global outlier.
Drug-Related Crimes
Drug-related crime is a concern in Istanbul, as it is in any major metropolitan area. Yet they are largely confined to marginalized neighborhoods and rarely affect tourists. In terms of fatalities, Berlin recorded 294 drug-related deaths in 2024, London around 500 in 2023, Istanbul 314 in 2020, and New York a staggering 3,046 in 2023.
Tourist Scams
Accurate official numbers are elusive, yet traveler reports place Istanbul in a distinct category. Forum discussions on Reddit, Quora, and TripAdvisor repeatedly highlight tourist-targeted schemes, such as bar scams and travel-card tricks, ranking the city among the most frequently discussed ‘travel scam’ destinations. That said, the scams in Istanbul are less confrontational and more socially orchestrated. Taxi rides, carpet bazaars, and shoeshining come to mind. Yet, Istanbul’s schemes go beyond the predictable. They reflect a level of sophistication rarely encountered in other global cities.

Petty Theft
No official rankings exist, but anecdotal evidence consistently identifies Barcelona, Rome, and Paris as European petty theft capitals, followed by Prague and Madrid. Istanbul is not in the same league, though it has localized petty theft issues affecting visitors.
Terror Attacks
Over the past two decades, Istanbul has faced several terror incidents, peaking between 2015 and 2017. Since then, both their frequency and lethality have dropped sharply — so much so that today Istanbul can be approached with the same calm confidence as any major Western capital.
Yet terror statistics tell only part of the story. In many Western capitals, gang-related shootings and other mass criminal violence are not classified as terrorism — yet they can be just as deadly. Including them, Istanbul proves far safer. In fact, such violence is far rarer in Istanbul than in comparable cities like London, Paris, or Berlin.

Numbers, Not Myths
Safety in Istanbul is often misrepresented. Some of it stems from selective comparisons with other cities that tell only half the story. The rest comes from the media’s appetite for drama — eager to magnify risk, reluctant to offer context. And beneath it all, those old orientalist echoes persist, still casting Istanbul as exotic, unpredictable, chaotic, and dangerous.
But when you actually look at the data, a different picture emerges. Istanbul isn’t a city under siege. Violent crime and homicide rates are low by global standards. Terror incidents have dropped sharply, and gang-related violence is rare. For visitors, the main risk comes from scams — localized, predictable, and easy to avoid with awareness.
Understanding safety in Istanbul requires nuance. For both travelers and residents alike, it comes down to informed choices, not fear.
